Live today: Europe’s largest roadside Digital Screen lights up in Birmingham

One Outdoor Media, a subsidiary of leading technology brand and Digital signage manufacturer Elonex, will launch its latest large format Digital screen. Situated at Junction 9 of the M6 adjacent to Birmingham Gateway and made up of two panels, Northbound of 35m x 7.2m and Southbound of 30m x 7.2m, it will total 468 square meters of LED making it the largest Digital screen in Europe. With a length of over 65m, the screen is almost the length of a Boeing 747.
Dimensions aside, the screen enjoys an enviable location. Both of its panels will target traffic on arguably the UK’s busiest motorway section at the M5-M6 intersection. It can be seen from surrounding areas including a busy road network, housing, industrial areas and hotels. The screen will not only reach the 6 million residents of the Midlands but will also catch the majority of traffic between UK’s three largest cities - London, Birmingham and Manchester. This equates to a huge viewing demographic and a fortnightly traffic count of 3.44 million, making it one of the most prominent advertising sites in Europe.
As a sign of goodwill and to promote leading local businesses, the M6 Junction 9 screen will also feature community advertisers such as Free Radio- a regional radio station, Adoption in the Black Country- a joint venture between local adoption agencies, Ironbridge Gorge Museum- an industrial heritage organisation and Cure Leukaemia – a charity supported by the Directors of Elonex.
Christian Clayton, Managing Director of One Outdoor Media commented on the news: "We are thrilled to increase our portfolio of displays with this iconic site. We are poised to make a difference in outdoor advertising by leading the European market with large scale format screens to promote the UK & the business within."
Nick Smith, CEO of Elonex said: ‘’This project is part of our 2013/2014 £14m investment into a UK-wide roll-out of large format premium advertising locations in regional cities across the country. Following founding the Screen Saver patent for computer screens in the late 90’s we’re proud to be now using our technology in the Digital Out Of Home Market. The screen carries some unique technology developed in the UK by our dedicated Research & Design team."
The M6 Junction 9 LED screen goes live today (26/04/2013), at 2pm.
One Outdoor Media also owns the 19m high ‘skyscraper’ outdoor screen next to the Manchester Piccadilly station, the tallest display in the country that reaches over 2.8 million commuters and city centre consumers every two weeks. The Ricoh Arena LED screen at the Gateway to Coventry and two 72m2 Digital Screens installed this month at the Glasgow Rangers Football Club are two other iconic advertising sites in the company’s portfolio.

Elonex Awarded Regional Growth Fund
- 2011-11-04
-
As an established brand Elonex has launched some of the world’s most exciting electronic products to a gadget hungry consumer base around the world. Established in 1986, Elonex’s extensive R&D programme has resulted in a varied portfolio of innovative consumer electronics. Elonex holds a bank of over 200 patents some of which are used by Apple, Sony and Samsung. In it’s 25 year history Elonex has launched many world firsts and pushed back the boundaries to make breakthrough consumer technology accessible to everyone.
The Regional Growth Fund award of £2,000,000 will be used towards the construction and operation of a state of the art electronics manufacturing plant in the Coventry area. The impact this will have on the UKs electronics sector will also secure the viability of numerous SME’s that will be invited to join the supply chain to serve Elonex’s new facility.
Stuart Smith the Chairman of Elonex states:
From our understanding and local knowledge of the skills currently under-employed in the Coventry area we believe that the Elonex Manufacturing Plant can address a significant element of employment transition from the public sector to the private sector. The jobs profile requirement in our business plan is broad – and many of the skills that administrative public sector workers have in terms of numeracy, literacy and IT will prove vital in supporting the “blue-chip” retailers that we will be supplying. Equally important are the manufacturing and assembly jobs that will be supported by the Governments apprenticeships schemes – particularly for the under 21 age group who we are keen to employ and develop as IT and electronics engineers of the future.
