Elonex supports
the Open Source Community by delivering the first comprehensive 3G
communications platform for Linux, a major step in the continued progression
of open source software.
Elonex’s rapid
growth in the Ultra Mobile Computing (UMC) sector has lead the UK company to
support the development of the world’s first comprehensive Linux based 3G
connection agent. The Wader client is the first application that allows
Linux platform computer systems to connect to 3G mobile internet on any
network, with any mobile broadband hardware and gives the open source user a
straightforward, “three click” solution to get access to the internet on the
move.
Wader was
developed to support the launch of the webbook, a new Elonex 10” UMC
available exclusively from Carphone Warehouse. The webbook is the embodiment
of the shift in consumer habits towards Ultra Mobile Computing, providing
users a highly portable and fully functional device that gives them
on-demand access to the internet even when they’re out and about, and on the
move.
The Wader project was made possible with help from a
consortium of contributors. The project included development by Warp
Networks, The Open Learning Center, Carphone Warehouse and the Mobile
networks, Orange, Three and T-Mobile.
Elonex now provides Linux platforms on many of its UMCs
and is putting a large amount of effort into development of the Linux
platform. Wader is a contribution by Elonex to the Open Source community and
is licensed under the Gnu General Public License (GPL), making Wader truly
free software and enabling anyone to contribute and enhance the
functionality of the product.
The Wader project is hosted at

binary packages for Ubuntu and Debian based Linux distributions are
available from Launchpad.net at
